Former cartel leader ‘El Mayo’ starts life sentence

Ismael Zambada, also known as ‘El Mayo,’ was sentenced to life in prison in the U.S. on Monday.

Zambada agreed to a plea deal last August, admitting to charges of racketeering conspiracy and continuing a criminal enterprise. He will also forfeit $15 billion in drug trafficking profits.

Zambada co-founded the Sinaloa Cartel with El Chapo.
