Wooden casket of Pope Francis lies in St. Peter’s Square

The simple, wooden casket of Pope Francis lies in St. Peter’s Square as hundreds of thousands observe a moment of silence during his funeral.

It was a reflection of Francis’ 12-year papacy to stress priests as servants and to construct “a poor church for the poor.”

As part of Francis’ push to simplify the papal funeral rites, his body is in a single wooden coffin.
