At a recent summit in Lisbon, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for a ban on autonomous weapons, as in, machines that can kill people without human involvement. While 26 countries have called for an outright ban on them already, many of the heaviest hitters have yet to sign on…including the US. The UN also recently organized a meeting to discuss the issue with representatives from about 70 countries, but nothing really came of that either. The Resident discusses why.
