Hong Kong has one of the most iconic skylines in the world thanks to its high-rise buildings and extremely tall skyscrapers. There are more than 42,000 buildings in Hong Kong, and 482 of those are skyscrapers taller than 150 m. Limited space means that Hong Kong’s skyline is constantly changing. Skyscrapers are regularly demolished and replaced with taller and more expensive ones. Because of this, historic buildings in the city are incredibly rare. Hong Kong’s high-rises and skyscrapers are a combination of residential and commercial properties. Some skyscrapers in Hong Kong even have five-star hotels inside them. Hong Kong’s tallest building, the 490-m tall International Commerce Centre, cost about $3.5 billion to build. It has a 360-degree indoor observation deck called Sky100 and floors 102 to 118 are occupied by the Ritz Carlton Hotel Hong Kong. The skyscraper is also eco-friendly and uses a state-of-the-art network of sensors to monitor and reduce the building’s energy consumption. Developers sometimes face major hurdles when building skyscrapers in Hong Kong. Nina Tower is Hong Kong’s sixth tallest building at a height of 320 m, but it was supposed to be much taller. Developers originally planned for Nina tower to be 518 m tall, but blueprints had to be revised because of the skyscraper’s proximity to Chek Lap Kok airport. Hong Kong even has plans to build an $80 billion artificial island to solve the city’s housing crisis. Here’s a look at Hong Kong’s skyscrapers. Keep watching to learn more about why Hong Kong has so many skyscrapers.
