Vice President Joseph R. Biden says former President Bill Clinton’s past “shouldn’t matter” in the context of the 2016 campaign, saying Mr. Clinton “paid a price” in getting impeached by the U.S. House over the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
“No, it shouldn’t matter,” Mr. Biden said in an excerpt of an interview to air on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
“Look, I can’t make any excuses for Bill Clinton’s conduct, and I wouldn’t attempt to make any excuses for the conduct,” he said.
“But he paid a price for it. He paid a price. He was impeached,” Mr. Biden said, referring to the impeachment resulting from Mr. Clinton’s relationship with Ms. Lewinsky, the former White House intern.
“He expressed his deep sorrow and acknowledged what he did,” Mr. Biden said.
