Emotet was one of the most professional, long-lasting and dangerous cybercrime operations ever seen. It started off in 2014 stealing people’s bank logins, but became the go-to solution for cybercriminals wanting to install all kinds of other malicious software onto a computer, like ransomware or remote control tools.

But then, earlier this year, an international police operation finally pulled the malware offline, and an IT specialist suspected of being a key member of the Emotet crew was arrested in Ukraine. So how did Emotet become such a huge criminal operation? And what can we learn from its rise and fall?
