California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill last Friday that basically allows a person with HIV to knowingly spread the disease to sexual partners or through blood transfusions with little repercussions.
It used to be a felony to spread HIV on purpose to a sexual partner. Not anymore.
According to the LA Times:
Modern medicine allows those with HIV to live longer lives and nearly eliminates the possibility of transmission, according to state Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblyman Todd Gloria (D-San Diego), authors of the bill.
Basically, California is saying that because medicine and treatment have improved the fatal disease is generally manageable, so it’s fine to secretly spread it to un-knowing sexual partners.
