Street-to-Track Performance: Testing Michelin’s Ultimate Sports Car Tires
Performance car owners face a constant dilemma: swapping tires for a weekend track day is impractical, yet standard street tires rarely handle extreme track limits. In this track test, host Scotty Reiss puts two distinct performance tire philosophies to the test using the Toyota GR Supra and Chevrolet Corvette C8.
The experiment begins in the Toyota Supra equipped with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S, a tire engineered to serve as a daily driver during the workweek and a capable track option on weekends. Beyond providing predictable dynamics on twisty mountain roads, the Pilot Sport 4 S delivered surprisingly strong traction on a wet track, which is a surface where aggressive performance tires typically struggle.
For dedicated track monsters, the Corvette C8 utilized the MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 R, an extreme, track-focused semi-slick available as original equipment on select hypersport cars. On the track, the Cup 2 R’s sticky motorsport compound provided massive launch grip—causing the chassis to shudder as it grabbed the pavement—and enabled the Corvette C8 to hit 108 mph down the straightaway. This test demonstrates the clear distinction between versatile daily performance rubber and dedicated track-focused tires.
