CATATUMBO, COLOMBIA— Violent militias are at war over territory in this strip of land neighboring Venezuela, a key hub for coca-leaf cultivation and drug trafficking. State presence is scarce. Drone attacks and targeted killings are leaving civilians in the crossfire.
In February, a Wall Street Journal video crew went to the heart of the conflict fueled by the cocaine trade and became the first journalists to visit a town after a lockdown enforced by armed militants was lifted.
