The $38,000 Volvo EX30: Small, Sustainable, and Seriously Chic | Cars & Bikes | Forbes

Volvo is making a calculated play for the “attainable luxury” segment, positioning the all-electric EX30 as both its most affordable model and its most design-forward to date. Starting at just under $38,000 for the single-motor variant and scaling to $48,000 for the rugged, adventure-ready Cross Country edition, the EX30 is strategically priced to disrupt the premium EV market.

Now manufactured in Belgium—ensuring wider availability for the U.S. market—the vehicle’s interior is a masterclass in minimalist innovation, trading traditional clutter for a hyper-efficient, “less is more” design philosophy. By consolidating all driver data onto a singular center screen and replacing individual door speakers with a singular, dash-spanning soundbar, Volvo has drastically reduced component complexity while elevating the cabin’s aesthetic. Their commitment to sustainability extends to the upholstery, where traditional materials are swapped for woven combinations of wool and recycled plastics, proving that the future of automotive luxury is as much about environmental responsibility as it is about cutting-edge technology.

When Volvo introduced the EX30 to the world in 2023 the response was, well, electric. Who knew that the introduction of a mid-$30,000 five-passenger EV with an elevated design would generate so much interest? But an elegantly appointed Volvo priced well below its other models and accessible to a new group of buyers proved tantalizing.

It didn’t exactly work out that way in the US, though; between supply shortages, sales bans on Chinese-built cars, tariffs and the end of federal EV tax incentives, the launch of the Volvo EX30 in the US felt more like a stumble.

Globally, though, it has been a huge hit. The model, which is built in both China and in Belgium, has sold more than 200,000 units since it launched in 2024 and won numerous awards, including the 2024 World Urban Car award.
