It Wasn’t A Talent Problem: The Real Reason Women’s Sports Are Finally Winning


At the 2025 Forbes Power Women’s Summit, Stephanie Marciano, Head of Brand & Sports Marketing, Ally , Renee Montgomery, 2x WNBA Champion & Co-owner, Atlanta Dream and Midge Purce, Forward, Gotham FC talk women’s sports viewership, and the future positive investments in women’s sports.

Renee Montgomery represents the new age of athlete-entrepreneurs working across sports, media, fashion, and culture. A West Virginia native, she graduated from UConn as a National Champion before winning two WNBA championships. Her elevation from locker room to boardroom was ground breaking as she became Co-Owner and Vice President of the WNBA Atlanta Dream, a first for a WNBA player. Renee’s electric personality and game insight have become highlights for Hello Sunshine’s Women’s Sports Now, CBS, TNT, and her podcast Montgomery & Co. Her documentary, A Radical Act, was produced by UNINTERRUPTED and is streaming now on Roku. Renee lives in Atlanta with her wife, music artist Sirena Grace. Together they launched Think Tank Productions and are developing scripted and documentary projects for film and tv alongside Wiip, Olive Bridge, and more.

Stephanie Marciano is the head of brand and sports marketing at Ally Financial, responsible for the strategic direction and execution of Ally’s portfolio of sports, entertainment and lifestyle partnerships, which include the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), Unrivaled basketball league, Las Vegas Aces, United States Golf Association (USGA), National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and the NWSL Players Association, Atlantic Coast Conference, NASCAR, Charlotte FC, Detroit Pistons and the American Black Film Festival.

Stephanie is instrumental in Ally’s work aimed at elevating women’s sports, specifically as it pertains to initiatives such as the 50/50 pledge, Ally’s bold commitment to invest equally in women’s and men’s sports media.

An influential leader in the industry who is driving women’s sports to new heights, Stephanie was named to Sports Business Journal’s (SBJ) prestigious Forty Under 40 list in 2024, the same year SBJ awarded Ally “Sports Sponsor of The Year.”

Midge Purce is a forward for the NY/NJ Gotham FC. Last season she earned the MVP title in the 2023 NWSL Championship for her pivotal performance in the Gotham FC victory. The Harvard graduate serves as the youngest member of Harvard’s Board of Overseers – the University’s second highest elected governing board. She is a Founder of the Black Women’s Player Collective (BWPC) and was a part of the negotiating team who won the groundbreaking USWNT gender discrimination lawsuit in 2022 ultimately, accomplishing equal pay for women in sports.
