In the wake of a controversy over the FBI’s insistence that Apple help out when it was trying to unlock and inspect a smart phone used by a terrorist, 10 members of Congress are suggesting the agency come clean on its strategy for breaking those security codes itself – or not.
Just a few weeks back, a report from the Justice Department’s inspector general found the bureau was not transparent about its technical capabilities before suing Apple to unlock an encrypted iPhone.
It involved a phone used by the Muslim terrorists who killed more than a dozen people last winter in San Bernardino, California.
The agency said it needed Apple to provide access to the locked digital device, even though subsequent revelations showed that the agency was able to that itself.
Now members of Congress have written to the FBI for answers about what’s going on.
