Ryan Touts Permanent Tax Cuts Amid Talk of a Scaled Back Plan

House Speaker Paul Ryan is sticking to the principle of making any tax cuts permanent — this time in a blog post Wednesday — even as others in his party have been discussing some temporary alternatives.

Ryan’s post notes that working families need the certainty of permanent tax-rate cuts to spend wisely and save for the future. It says, “if we are really serious about growing our economy, we believe these tax cuts should be permanent.”

But with the GOP under pressure to deliver a win on changes to the U.S. tax code, members of Ryan’s own party may be more inclined to support a temporary-but-doable approach over a permanent-but-much-more-difficult option. The outcome of this debate, which is really just getting started, may indeed reveal what is most important to Republicans in Congress.
