2026 Subaru Outback: Inside The Redesign That’s Dividing Fans | Cars & Bikes | Forbes

The 2026 Subaru Outback arrives as a calculated response to five years of intensive consumer research, navigating a delicate balance between its heritage as an adventurous wagon and a strategic pivot toward an SUV-centric shape. Completely redesigned for the 2026 model year, the Outback introduces a more chiseled silhouette and a simplified lineup that removes the traditional base model in favor of a standard “Premium” entry point starting at approximately $35,000.

While the core BOXER engine remains the heartbeat of the vehicle—offering 260 horsepower in the turbo configuration—the real transformation is found in the reinforced architecture. The roof is now designed to accommodate a rooftop tent, while the side rails can independently support up to 220 pounds for accessories like hammocks or sunvisors. Inside, Subaru has addressed vocal criticisms by restoring a physical panel of buttons and dials for climate control. The interior is anchored by a new digital driver display and the largest multimedia screen in the brand’s history, yet it thoughtfully retains a traditional lever-style gear selector to satisfy long-term loyalists.
