The Biden administration’s imposition of a vaccine mandate continues to provoke controversy. Workers at the Los Alamos Laboratory say that exemptions have been unduly denied them and have brought a lawsuit in hopes of preventing the mandate’s enforcement. Employees at Savannah River Nuclear Solutions are also suing over the requirement. Should we be worried about the way the COVID-19 vaccine mandate has rocked the nuclear sector in the US? Is it leading to the country’s loss of its best nuclear scientists? Attorney Jonathan Diener, who is representing more than 100 scientists, engineers and others at the Los Alamos site in their lawsuit, shares his insights. Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines will no longer place employees on unpaid leave as exemption-requests are considered. Pilots and others have taken issue with the COVID-19 vaccine mandate and called it unconstitutional. This comes as the airline reels from the cancellation of thousands of flights without reasonable explanation, infuriating the flying public and leading to tremendous public relations fallout. Then Pamella Seay of Gulf Coast University shares her analysis. She points out that the impact of COVID-19 varies widely from one region to another, frustrating hopes for broad solutions.
