Project Natick is an innovative creation from Microsoft that puts data storage centers underwater. Microsoft Azure is expanding with underwater containers that are more eco-friendly, cheaper to build, and require less infrastructure than on-land data centers. Data storage is an industry expected to be worth more than $200 billion by 2027, so coming up with a sustainable way to store data and provide it quickly to coastal regions is definitely in Microsoft’s best interest. But how does this ambitious idea work?

Large containers filled with servers are lowered more than 100-feet to the ocean floor. They include their own cooling systems and leak-proof exteriors. Deep under the ocean, they’re less likely to be jostled by humans, have their temperature regulation systems fail, or experience corrosion from oxygen. Project Natick therefore has a lower failure rate than traditional data servers– and they can be manufactured for much cheaper.

Is the future of data storage underwater? Cloud services are becoming a massive industry, with companies like Google and Amazon spending billions every year on cloud storage. Now that Project Natick has been tested and is evolving, the future of data really might be at the bottom of the sea. Click play for everything you need to know about Microsoft’s new data servers– as well as the massive data storage industry that’s convincing providers to create better, faster and more reliable servers that will get lightning speed service to customers all around the world, improving the way we use and experience the Cloud.
