Jose to Churn Up East Coast as Category 1, Hurricane Center Says

Tropical Storm Jose was expected to strengthen into at least a Category 1 hurricane later on Friday, bringing “high surfs and life threatening rip currents” along sections of the United States east coast, the National Hurricane Center said Friday morning.

Swells generated by Jose were affecting Bermuda, the Bahamas, the northern coasts of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, and the Southeast coast of the United States, and will spread northward along the Mid-Atlantic coast of the U.S. during the next few days.

The storm was about 500 miles south-southwest of Bermuda, packing maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, the NHC said, per Reuters.

“Jose is moving toward the west-northwest near 8 miles per hour. A gradual turn toward the north is expected later today and on Saturday,” the NHC said in its latest advisory.
