Tesla may have to pay as much as $163 million to Tesla owners in Norway. Tesla drivers in Norway brought a complaint to the Norwegian conciliation council in December 2020 citing that charging times slowed down after a software update the previous year. The poorer performance allegedly affected Tesla Model S vehicles built between 2013 and 2015. The courts have ordered that Tesla must pay each of the Tesla owners involved in the lawsuit $16,000 each. That means Tesla could be facing a $480,000 fine. However, Tesla still has a chance to appeal the ruling. Based on the number of Tesla owners in Norway, Tesla could have to pay as much as $163 million overall. We will have to wait and see how these allegations affect the electric vehicle maker, but in the long run, the company might not be affected a great deal. There was a similar lawsuit filed in the United States. In 2019, a class-action lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California; the plaintiffs of the lawsuit claimed an update decreased the range of earlier Tesla models by as much as 40 miles. “Under the guise of ‘safety’ and increasing the ‘longevity’ of the batteries of the Class Vehicles, Tesla fraudulently manipulated its software with the intent to avoid its duties and legal obligations to customers to fix, repair, or replace the batteries of the Class Vehicles, all of which Tesla knew were defective, yet failed to inform its customers of the defects,” wrote the lawsuit.
