The American beauty industry is constantly changing. But it’s clear one trend is here to stay: the popularity of Asian beauty. Many people in the AAPI community grew up feeling underrepresented in this industry, but with trends like gua sha, rice water, jade rollers and sheet masks blowing up on social media, Asian beauty is having a huge moment. South Korea is among the top 10 global beauty markets worth over $13 billion dollars in 2017, and facial skincare is projected to be worth $7.2 Billion in 2020. While consumers are enjoying Asian products, Asian hate crimes persist across the united states. Research released Stop AAPI Hate in march showed nearly 3800 cases of hate crimes against Asian people, and 68% of the attacks occurred to Asian women. Founders of Glow Recipe Sarah Lee and Christine Chang and Allure Editor in Cheif Michelle Lee, leaders in the beauty space, fight to increase the visibility of members of the AAPI community through representation in beauty.
