You’re at home and the phone rings with someone claiming to be a police officer. They tell you that a loved one has been involved in a crime and needs cash for bail. This officer then directs you where to send the money and, in some cases, asks you not to tell other family members.

Sound suspicious? Well it’s the conceit of a growing kind of crime typically carried out against the elderly. These schemes can get large and complex, and can net conspirators north of $1 million. But how do these perpetrators get away with these scams and what makes them so successful?
