California governor defies NCAA, signs ‘Fair Pay to Play’ Act

On Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill allowing student-athletes in California to hire agents and make from endorsement deals. College athletes will be able to use their name, image and likeness for financial gain. However, the law will not take effect until January 2023. The NCAA is pushing back on the move, saying it will ruin amateurism in sports and create an un-level playing field. There was a heartwarming of sportsmanship displayed at the World Athletics Championships in Doha as Braima Suncar Dabo stopped to help his opponent and carried him across the 5000m finish line.
