Each year Hollywood politicizes the Academy Awards and each year the ratings continue to tumble, with this year falling off the cliff with double digits to an all-time low according to early estimates.
The ratings for Sunday night’s telecast of the 90th annual Academy Awards collapsed by a whopping 16 percent.
The Oscars had never fallen below 32 million viewers and 21 metered markets household rating before, forcing pundits to scratch their heads.

The best the Academy Awards have done was in 2014 when Ellen DeGeneres hosted with 43.7 million, but the drop off the next year was astounding, down to 37.3 million. It has been in a steep decline since.
Variety reports that “the telecast averaged an 18.9 household rating and 32 share in Nielsen’s metered market overnight ratings. That’s down about 16% from the 22.5/37 rating
